For those families who like to head off and explore new countries and cultures then Sri Lanka is a fantastic option, it offers some incredible, unique, and exciting family holidays. Here are a few ideas…

GAL OYA NATIONAL PARK, SRI LANKA

Gal Oya National Park, in eastern Sri Lanka, is off the normal tourist route but it’s a fantastic place for the adventurous family. Gal Oya Lodge is a fantastic 10 bedroom property built into the jungle surrounding the park. It’s a great base to explore the surrounding area from. Kids can get involved with setting camera traps for the in-house research centre to try and spot leopards and other cats which prowl through the jungles at night. Other activities include jungle drives, picnics, swimming in rivers, walks with the Vedda tribe, bird walks and a boating safari in search of elephants.

PRIVATE BEACH VILLA, SRI LANKA

Along the south coast of Sri Lanka are a handful of stunning private beach villas, which can be rented out in their entirety. One of our favourite properties is Saffron House, which sits on a cliff top above Hiriketiya Beach, a beautiful cove in Sri Lanka. It’s a great place for families as the beach is safe to swim in as it’s protected but it also offers some great surf breaks for beginners close to shore, and intermediate breaks to the eastern side of the beach. There is a lovely café on the beach run by Marty which serves up lunch, coffee’s, smoothies and beers.

RUKGALA RETREAT, SRI LANKA

Opened in 2018 Rukgala is a retreat style hotel which provides guests with an opportunity to explore authentic island life in central Sri Lanka. The property sits in a remote, tropical landscape on a hill overlooking the Victoria Reservoir and mountains beyond. There is a focus on health and wellbeing with an amazing menu of healthy food & drink making the most of local ingredients and product. For families that want to get out and explore there are a variety of activities on offer including village walks, hikes up into the surrounding hills to visit caves and temples, wild swimming, kayaking or SUP boarding in the reservoir, yoga lessons, golf (5 minutes drive away) and a beautiful swimming pool to cool down in.
