Day 1: ARRIVAL INTO SRI LANKA
You’ll be met in the arrivals hall by your driver and transferred by car to your hotel, about 45 minutes north-east of the airport. It’s a great place to head to after a long flight, where you can relax and unwind in beautiful lakeside surroundings, lush gardens and refreshing swimming pool.

Days 2-3: MAKANDURA – SIGIRIYA (approx. 3 hours)
After breakfast your driver will pick you up and drive you inland to the Cultural Triangle, stopping off at Dambulla Cave Temple on route. You’ll have the afternoon and following day to explore this fascinating part of central Sri Lanka, visiting ancient cities, fortresses, temples and ruins at Sigiriya, Pidurangala and Anuradhapura.

Days 4-6: SIGIRIYA – DIGANA (approx. 3 hrs)
This morning you’ll head south to Digana, just east of Kandy, to a remote retreat on the shores of Lake Victoria (Victoria Reservoir). Rukgala Retreat is a really cool property that aims to give guests a really authentic Sri Lankan experience. Head up into the hills behind the property to visit local temples and ancient meditation caves, or head out onto the lake and explore on kayak, stand-up-paddle-board or local paddle boat. Or head back to the relaxed atmosphere for some yoga, swimming or Ayurvedic treatments.

Days 7-9 DIGANA – KANDY – ELLA (approx. 7 hrs)
You’ll be transferred to Kandy Railway Station for your train journey down to Ella. This is one of the most famous and beautiful train journeys in the world, carving it’s way through the central highlands and colonial tea plantations. Your hotel, 98 Acres, is built high up on the hillside and offers amazing views and is also great base to explore this mountainous regions on bike or foot.

Days 10-12 ELLA – GAL OYA NATIONAL PARK (approx. 3 hrs)
It’s a beautiful drive down through the highlands and then across to Gal Oya Lodge in time for lunch. Gal Oya Lodge is a stylish 10 bedroom lodge, built into the edge of the jungle bordering the national park. You’ll have the next 3 days to explore the vast wilderness, incredibly scenery, diverse habitats and the wildlife that lives here. We’d highly recommend the jungle drive with picnic, boating safari, vedda and bird walks and the jungle cooking class.

Days 13-16 GAL OYA – ARUGAM BAY (2 hrs)
After your adventures across Sri Lanka you deserve some chill time, so today you’ll drive across to the east coast, just north of Arugum Bay. You’ll be staying at Jetwing Surf, a really cool, sustainable, barefoot luxury beach hotel with 20 rustic cabanas set on a beautiful beach. If you’re still looking to expend some energy then try out some beach volleyball, join a local fisherman on a day out at sea or catch a wave at one of the world’s finest surfing points in and around Arugam Bay.

Day 17 ARUGAM BAY – AMPARA – NEGOMBO (5 hrs)
Today you’ll drive from Arugam Bay up to Ampara (1h 40mins away) in time for your domestic flight to Colombo Airport. You’ll be met and transferred to your hotel, just 15 minutes drive away. Villa Hundira is a really sweet, friendly, well-priced boutique hotel located on the shores of Negombo Lagoon. You can explore the old fishing town, or relax by the pool and they do some nice evening food too. It’s a great place to overnight near to the airport.

Day 18 DEPARTURE (15 mins)
Today you will be transferred back to Colombo International Airport in time for your international departure flight.
Best time to visit
June to October – This itinerary is really designed for the northern hemisphere summer months, between June and October, when Sri Lanka’s east coast is at it’s best. The monsoon is on the other side of the island, meaning much less wind and dryer weather on the east coast. There can be some rain during these months across the island, so it’s worth bringing a rain coat but generally the weather should be good.
