You’ll be met in the arrivals hall by your driver and transferred by car to your hotel in Negombo, just 20 minutes away. Villa Hundira is a charming boutique hotel, set within tropical gardens on the shores of Negombo Lagoon. It’s a great option for your first night, to help get over a long flight and freshened up for the start of your adventures.

Accommodation: Villa Hundira for 1 night

Days 2-3:        NEGOMBO – CULTURAL TRIANGLE (approx. 5 hours)

After breakfast your driver will pick you up and drive you up to Dambulla in the Cultural Triangle, with a picnic lunch on route. You’ll have the next 2 ½ days to explore this fascinating part of central Sri Lanka, visiting ancient cities, fortresses, temples and ruins at Dambulla, Sigiriya, Pidurangala and Anurahapura.

Accommodation: Wild Grass Nature Resort for 2 nights.

Days 4-6:        DAMBULLA – ELKADUWA (approx. 3 hrs)

Today you’ll drive south, through the Knuckles Mountain Range, and into the Elkaduwa Tea growing region in time for lunch on the veranda at Ashburnham Estate, a beautiful 6-bedroom tea plantation hotel. Ashburnham Estate offers the chance to relax and unwind in a beautiful remote setting, but also acts as a good base to explore from. Spend the next 3 days walking in the foothills, taking a tour of the tea plantation and factory, swimming in the waterfall, learning Reggie’s (chef) secret recipes or a day trip down to Kandy.

Accommodation: Ashburnham Estate for 3 nights.

Days 7-9       ELKADUWA – GAL OYA NATIONAL PARK (approx. 4 hrs)

It’s a beautiful drive across the mountains and then dropping down to Gal Oya Lodge in time for lunch. Or alternatively stopping for a picnic on route. Gal Oya Lodge is a stylish 10 bedroom lodge, built into the edge of the jungle bordering the national park. You’ll have the next 3 days to explore the vast wilderness, incredibly scenery, diverse habitats and the wildlife that lives here. We’d highly recommend the jungle drive with picnic, boating safari, vedda and bird walks and the jungle cooking class.

Accommodation: Gal Oya Lodge for 3 nights.

Days 10-13     GAL OYA – Tangalle (5 hrs)
Heading off after breakfast you’ll head south, through remote towns and villages on this rarely visited part of the island. You’ll stop for a picnic lunch on route before arriving to the south coast early afternoon. Coco Tangalla is a charming little boutique beach hotel located near Tangalle. There is a lovely swimming pool if you want to just sit and relax by the pool or alternatively take a stroll along the beach and there are some safe swimming just a few minutes walk away.

Accommodation: Coco Tangalla for 3 nights.

Days 14-15     FORTALEZA – Galle Fort (2.5 hrs)

Today is a gentle drive across to Galle Fort, originally built in 1588 by the Portuguese and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a lovely place to explore for a couple of days in the shops, galleries, gem stores, museums, cafes and restaurants. Fortaleza Hotel is a lovely collection of renovated merchant houses in the centre of Galle which can either be taken on a room basis or as a private house.

Accommodation: Fortaleza for 2 nights.

Day 16    Transfer back to Colombo Airport (2.5 hrs)

Best time to visit

December to April – The best time to visit Sri Lanka with this itinerary is between December and April when the weather across central, western and southern Sri Lanka tends to be consistently dry and hot. December can see more rain than the other months. The south-east monsoon means that the winds are hitting the east coast at this time of year and the west and south coasts tend to be calmer and less windy.
