Days 4-6: WILPATTU – SIGIRIYA (approx. 3 hrs)
After breakfast you will drive inland to the Cultural Triangle, with a picnic lunch on route in Anuradhapura. You’ll have the next 2 full days to explore this fascinating part of central Sri Lanka, visiting ancient cities, fortresses, temples and ruins at Dambulla, Sigiriya, Pidurangala and Anuradhapura. You’ll be staying at Vil Uyana, in one of their beautiful garden dwellings, surrounded by nature, gardens, water and paddy fields.

Days 7-9 SIGIRIYA – ELKADUWA (approx. 3 hrs)
Today you’ll drive south, through the beautiful scenes of the Knuckles Mountain Range, and into the Elkaduwa Tea growing region in time for lunch on the veranda at Ashburnham Estate, a beautiful 6-bedroom tea plantation hotel. Ashburnham Estate offers the chance to relax and unwind in a beautiful remote setting, but also acts as a good base to explore from. Spend the next 3 days walking in the foothills, taking a tour of the tea plantation and factory, swimming in the waterfall, learning Reggie’s (chef) secret recipes or a day trip down to Kandy.
Accommodation: Ashburnham Estate for 3 nights.
Days 10-12 ELKADUWA – GAL OYA NATIONAL PARK (approx. 4 hrs)
It’s a beautiful drive across the mountains and then dropping down to Gal Oya Lodge in time for lunch. Or alternatively stopping for a picnic on route. Gal Oya Lodge is a stylish 10 bedroom lodge, built into the edge of the jungle bordering the national park. You’ll have the next 2 days to explore the vast wilderness, incredible scenery, diverse habitats and the wildlife that lives here. We’d highly recommend the jungle drive with picnic, boating safari, Vedda and bird walks and the jungle cooking class. There is also a swimming pool which is a great way to unwind.
Accommodation: Gal Oya Lodge for 3 nights.
Days 13-17 GAL OYA – PASIKUDA (3 hrs)
After exploring Sri Lanka it’s time to hit the beach so today you’ll head north-east to Kalkudah Bay, just south of the coastal town of Pasikuda. Karpaha Sands is one of our favourite beach properties in Sri Lanka and has re-defined boutique luxury on the east coast. Karpaha offers 17 luxury tented suites which are located in an old coconut plantation on the edge of a quiet stretch of beach. The design of the property is very chic, with furnishings from Bali and Thailand mixed amongst a unique collection of art. There is a beautiful infinity pool, located at the double story bar, lounge & restaurant, which is a nice place to hang out and listen to some music and have a drink looking out over the Indian Ocean. It’s a really relaxing place where you can just unwind for a few days, walking along the long bay, lying out on a sunbed on the quiet beach, swimming in the sea or pool, dropping into the spa for a massage, chill out in the library or games area during the heat of the day or be a hermit and enjoy the privacy of your suite day and night.
Accommodation: Karpaha Sands for 5 nights.
Day 18 PASIKUDA – NEGOMBO (3 hrs)
Today you’ll catch a domestic flight from Pasikuda to Colombo, where your driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel just 20 minutes drive away. The Wallawwa in an airport hotel with a difference and is the perfect place to finish off your trip in style. They have beautiful gardens to relax and unwind in and a lovely swimming pool surrounded by tropical plants and trees. The rooms are to die for and the outdoor restaurant overlooking the garden is a wonderful place for a finale dinner.
Accommodation: The Wallawwa for 1 night.
Day 19 Transfer back to Colombo Airport (20 mins)
Best time to visit
June – October – This itinerary has really been designed specifically for these months because the south-west monsoon means that the east coast is the best place to be for beach time during these months. As with any tropical climate you can expect a bit of rain or a thunderstorm during these months. If you like the look of the itinerary but are travelling outside of these months you can easily move the beach part down to the south coast, where the weather is better from December to April.
